The first week decides a lot
A new hire who shows up and doesn't know where to clock in, who to ask or what they're supposed to do doesn't feel like they've joined anything. Most managers know this. They just don't have a spare hour every time someone starts, and the good intentions get lost in a busy Saturday.
An onboarding pack does the routine part for you, so your time with the new person can go to what only you can do.
What goes in a pack
A pack is a list of steps. Each step is one of four types:
- Read. Short text, such as "How we do breaks" or "Who to call if you're sick."
- Open a link. Send them somewhere in the app, like Documents to sign the handbook, or to a website for a form you use elsewhere.
- Do a task. "Find the first-aid kit," "Set your availability" or "Shadow Sam for one closing shift."
- Pass a quiz. It's marked done when they pass.
You can start from a template and change what you like. A good pack takes about an hour to build.
Automatic, if you want
Turn on auto-assign, and each person gets the pack on their first sign-in. You don't have to remember a thing. Or assign packs by hand, when you only want them for certain roles or stores.
You can see where each person is, so "did you do the safety quiz?" isn't a question you have to ask anymore.
A pack for a typical hourly job
Here's a simple example. Change it to fit your business:
- Read: Welcome note from the owner, with one honest paragraph on what matters here.
- Task: Install the app, add your photo and set your availability.
- Link: Sign the handbook in Documents.
- Read: How clocking in works, and how breaks work.
- Quiz: Five questions on safety.
- Task: Meet your shift lead and ask for a tour.
- Link: Take the "Our closing routine" course.
- Task: After your first week, tell your manager one thing that confused you.
That last step is worth keeping. New people see what the rest of you stopped noticing years ago.
Want it as a paper list too? We've got a free onboarding checklist, including the legal paperwork that has to happen separately.
What it doesn't replace
Software can't replace a person saying "glad you're here." It also doesn't handle government paperwork for you. Form I-9, tax withholding forms and new-hire reporting are still your job, and they have their own deadlines. Our guide covers those.
It works with the rest of the app
Packs draw on documents and e-signatures and on courses and quizzes, so there's only one copy of the handbook and one copy of the safety course. Update it there, and everyone gets the new version.
What it costs
Onboarding is in the HR & Skills hub on every plan, free for up to 10 people. Basic costs $14.50 a month billed yearly for your first 30 people.
